Explosives removal

In Europe, there was heavy fighting during World War II. The retreating German and allied forces left behind large quantities of ammunition and weapons in many locations, large portions of them in water bodies.

As a consequence, many explosives are still being found on channel, lake and river beds. In major infrastructural projects of recent years, such as new harbours and industrial estates, dangerous remains from the war are still being unearthed.

For instance, there are many unexploded bombs, grenades and artillery ammunitions that require special care in their approach and handling to ensure proper safety.

Heuvelman Ibis carries out the detection, defusing and removal of explosives together with our principals, including a through prior planning to remove any risks from the start. The safety of all persons involved of course has the highest priority.

Heuvelman Ibis uses various types of equipment to detect explosives in sediments of water bodies or on dry land. This includes mini-diggers (up to 5 tonnes), mobile excavators (up to 15 tonnes) and crawler excavators up to 90 tonnes. The larger cranes and dredgers are equipped with machine control devices and RTK positioning systems that ensure a high level of accuracy in detection and salvage even in difficult beds and at large depths. Our special drilling pole enables use to drill at a wide range of depths and angles. This makes it possible to e.g. probe below buildings.

For processing suspected (including chemically contaminated) material that we have dredged, we use underwater sieve equipment which separates the explosives from the soil in a safe, reliable and efficient manner. These works are of course undertaken in accordance with the applicable legal requirements. Together with our explosives experts, we make an exact planning to arrive at a suitable solution for all "explosive" problems. It goes without saying that we are VCA **, BRL and ISO9001 certified for these activities.

Heuvelman Ibis possesses a license under the Firearms Act and is therefore also authorised to temporarily store any salvaged ammunition in suitable areas.
